Two Truths and a Lie: ideas, examples and online game

A topic comes up and you tell three things about yourself: one of them is a lie. Everyone votes on three, whoever falls for it takes a sip (or water), and the phone keeps track of turns and points. Below are 120 two truths and a lie ideas, each with an example, in case anyone blanks.

How to play Two Truths and a Lie on your phone

It's the classic game, minus the struggle of thinking up what to talk about: the phone gives you a topic every turn, counts the votes and keeps track of who's best at fooling the group.

  1. 1Add the players and pick a level

You need 2 to 12 people. Add the names in the order you're sitting and pick the topics: Mild (travel, quirks, childhood, work), Party (nights out, embarrassing moments, stories with friends) or Spicy 18+ (flirting, dates and exes). You can mix levels.

  2. 2A topic comes up

The game says whose turn it is to tell and gives them a topic: “Your travels,” “Your nights out,” “Your worst date”… If the storyteller blanks, they can open “Stuck? See an example” and see three sample statements with the lie marked.

  3. 3Say three things, numbered

The storyteller says three statements about themselves on that topic out loud: one, two and three. Two are true and one is a lie. When they're done, they tap “Done telling: time to vote!”

  4. 4Vote on three

With one phone, on three everyone holds up 1, 2 or 3 fingers for the statement they think is the lie. Whoever has the phone taps once for each vote (if you lose count, “Recount” resets the votes to zero).

  5. 5The lie is revealed

The storyteller taps which one was the lie and the screen shows how many votes each statement got. In a room, everyone votes in secret on their own phone and the lie is revealed automatically once everyone has voted.

  6. 6Fall for it, take a sip

Everyone who fell for it takes a sip (or water). If nobody did, the sip (or water) goes to the storyteller: the lie was way too obvious.

  7. 7Points and the next turn

The storyteller scores one point for each person fooled (in a room, whoever catches the lie scores one too) and the leaderboard shows the top five. Then the next person tells, with a new topic: none repeat until they've all come up.

What is Two Truths and a Lie?

Two Truths and a Lie is one of the best-known icebreaker games: taking turns, each person says three things about themselves, two true and one made up, and everyone else has to guess which one is fake. It needs no supplies and takes ten seconds to explain.

The fun part is that the weirdest truths sound like lies and a well-told lie sounds true. Every round you learn something about your friends you never knew, and find out who can lie with a scary-good poker face.

This version is a two truths and a lie game online that runs in your phone's browser: nobody has to think up what to talk about, because a topic comes up every turn (120 in all, across three levels), and the phone counts the votes, hands out the sips and keeps the leaderboard.

Two Truths and a Lie as a drinking game: sips and points

The drinking rules are simple: whoever falls for the lie takes a sip (or water). If the whole group spots the lie, the sip (or water) goes to the storyteller for lying so badly. Nobody gets off the hook: either you fool the group or you pay for it.

There are points too. The storyteller scores one for each person they fool, and if you're playing in a room, everyone who catches the lie scores one as well. After every turn, the leaderboard shows the top five, which gets pretty competitive even if nobody's drinking.

Want to play without alcohol? Swap every sip for water or just play for points: the game works exactly the same.

How to use these two truths and a lie examples

The examples on this page are the same ones that show up in the game when you tap “Stuck? See an example”. They're not meant to be read word for word (everyone would know the lie), but to show you the tone: short, specific statements that sound alike, so none stands out more than the others.

What works best is using the topic and the example as a template: swap two statements for things that really happened to you and keep the third as the lie, or flip it around: take your weirdest real story and surround it with two ordinary truths.

Want to fool everyone? Make your lie as specific as your truths (names, places, numbers), keep all three about the same length and tell them in the same tone. And don't save the lie for last: everyone expects it there.

Spicy two truths and a lie (18+)

The Spicy level has 30 topics for a spicy two truths and a lie: flirting, blind dates, dating apps, exes, getting turned down, saying “I love you” and the times you almost got caught.

They're suggestive and good for a lot of laughs, but none of them are explicit: everyone decides what to share about themselves, so nobody has to tell anything they don't want to. If the group is close, mix them in with the Party topics; if not, save them for later.

Like everything on this site, it's for adults only. If you're playing as a couple or with someone new, keep the flirty vibe going with juicy Never Have I Ever.

Two Truths and a Lie online: everyone on their own phone

With one phone, you vote by holding up fingers. If you'd rather everyone play on their own phone, create a room: the storyteller marks their lie in secret before telling the statements, everyone else votes in secret (and can change their vote until everyone has voted), and the lie is revealed automatically once all the votes are in.

The room also works for playing long-distance: start a video call, have everyone join from their phone and let the storyteller say their three statements to the camera.

An icebreaker game for adults

Two Truths and a Lie is one of the best games for a group that doesn't know each other yet: a dinner with friends of friends, the first night of a group trip, a bachelorette party or a team-building event at work. Everyone chooses what to share, and on the Mild level the topics are as harmless as travel, quirks or your first job.

If you want to keep getting to know each other afterward, get to know you questions are the natural next step. And for more games that need no cards or dice, try Charades or the Imposter Game.

Two Truths and a Lie FAQ

01How do you play Two Truths and a Lie?

Taking turns, each person says three numbered statements about themselves: two are true and one is a lie. Everyone else votes on which one is the lie, and whoever falls for it takes a sip (or water). On the phone, you also get a topic every turn.

02How many people do you need?

2 to 12. The more of you there are, the more votes are in play and the more points the storyteller can score.

03How do you vote with one phone?

On three, everyone holds up 1, 2 or 3 fingers. Whoever has the phone taps once for each vote and, at the end, the storyteller taps which one was the lie. If you miscount, “Recount” resets the votes to zero.

04When do you drink?

Everyone who falls for the lie takes a sip (or water). If nobody does, the sip (or water) goes to the storyteller.

05How do points work?

The storyteller scores one point for each person they fool. In a room, whoever catches the lie scores a point too. After every turn, the leaderboard shows the top five.

06What if I can't think of anything?

Tap “Stuck? See an example”: you'll see three sample statements on that topic with the lie marked. Use them for inspiration and swap in things about you. All the examples are on this page too.

07What are some good two truths and a lie ideas?

There are 120 topics across three levels: 45 Mild (travel, quirks, childhood, work…), 45 Party (nights out, embarrassing moments, stories with friends) and 30 Spicy 18+ (flirting, dates and exes). Each one has an example, and you can mix levels.

08Can you play online, everyone on their own phone?

Yes. In a room, the storyteller marks their lie in secret before telling the statements and everyone votes from their phone; the lie is revealed once everyone has voted. With a video call open, it works just the same long-distance.

09Does it work for people who don't know each other?

It's one of the best icebreakers for adults: everyone decides what to share about themselves. You'll find more ideas for game night in all our games.

10Do you have to drink alcohol? Is it free?

You don't have to drink: every sip can be swapped for water, or you can just play for points. It's free and runs in your phone's browser, with no download and no sign-up. This site is for adults only (18+ and of legal drinking age where you live).
