What is the beer dice drinking game?
Drinking Dice is a game with a single die where each side decides who takes the sip: you, the person on your right, the person on your left, whoever has the crown, someone you pick or everyone. There are no questions to read and no rules to memorize, so it's perfect to kick off a pregame or to keep going in the background while the conversation flows.
The only special piece is the crown. One player holds it, they drink when a 3 comes up, and at that moment it moves to whoever rolled. That's why nobody keeps it for long, and every 3 brings a little suspense: who does it land on, and who ends up with it?
You play with 2 to 12 people and one phone that gets passed from hand to hand. And it's not a shots game: here every “drink” is a sip (or water), and it never takes more than that.
How to play with a real die
All you need is a regular six-sided die, the table on this page and any object to use as the crown: a cap, a bottle cap, a coaster. The crown starts with whoever rolls first, and the die passes to the person on the right, just like turns on the phone.
The rules are the same as on the phone: 1 is for the roller, 2 for the person on their right, 3 for whoever has the crown (who then hands it to the roller), 4 for the person on their left, on a 5 you pick, and on a 6 everyone drinks. With a real die, the only thing to keep track of is who's on each side, because no screen tells you.
If you've got two dice at home, you might like Three Man better: the classic dice drinking game with totals, doubles and a title nobody wants. And if you'd rather have dares than sips, Dare Dice has a type of dare on each side.
Tips to keep the game moving
The fun is all in the pace: roll fast, play the side and pass the phone without long pauses. It's pure luck, so there's no strategy to think about; the best part is the group's reaction when a 3 or a 6 comes up.
On a 5, spread it around: picking the same person every time stops being funny fast. And if someone gets hit several times in a row, the group can swap their next one for a dare or water, no questions asked.
For the night to end well, have water on the table from the start and keep the sips small. Whoever's playing with soda plays exactly the same as everyone else.
Variations: house rules, no alcohol and long-distance play
House rules: the crown holder gets to make one toast per lap, a 6 means everyone clinks glasses instead of drinking, or on a 5 you have to pick someone who hasn't had a sip yet that lap.
No alcohol: swap every sip for a point and have whoever racks up the most tell a story at the end, or use the dares from Dare Dice instead of sips.
Everyone on their own phone or on a video call: create a room and you'll all see the die, the result and the crown on your own screen. When you're far apart there's no table, but that's fine: “right” is the next person on the list, “left” is the previous one and the screen always shows the name.
When to play the drinking dice game
It's the game for the first few minutes of a pregame, when people are still showing up or nobody wants to think too hard: you can explain it in one sentence, and late arrivals can join the next game. It also works well in the background, between conversations.
When you want something with more to it, move on to Three Man to stick with dice, to the Dare Wheel for dares and surprises, or to Dare Dice so every roll brings something to do.
