What is the Who Am I? game?
The Who Am I? game (also called the headband game or the guess who I am game) is all about figuring out who you are when everyone knows except you. There's a name on your forehead, the others can read it, and you have to work it out with questions that can only be answered yes or no.
The fun is in what everyone else sees: someone very seriously asking “Am I good-looking?” or “Do I live in the ocean?” while the group tries not to laugh at the hippo or the movie villain on their forehead. And in the tension of every “no” that sends you back to square one.
On paper, it's played with sticky notes or paper headbands. Here, the phone is your sticky note and your scorekeeper.
Who Am I? online: phone on your forehead or everyone on their own
With one phone, the guesser taps “Start” without looking and has three seconds to hold it to their forehead. Everyone else sees the card, answers and taps “Question” as they go and, at the end, “Got it!” or “They give up”. One phone is all the group needs.
If you'd rather everyone play on their own phone, create a room: the card shows up on everyone's phone except the guesser's, so nobody has to hold anything to their forehead. Anyone can add the questions, the others confirm the right answer, and the guesser can tap “I give up”.
A room also works long-distance: everyone joins from their own phone, you start a video call and get asking.
Who Am I?, Charades or the Imposter Game: what's the difference?
All three are guessing games, each in its own way. In Who Am I? the card is yours and you guess it by asking: the others can only say yes or no. In Charades it's the other way around: you see the card and act it out without talking so your team can guess it.
In the Imposter Game, everyone knows a word except one person, and you have to figure out who's faking it from the clues. If your group likes working things out from a few hints, Who Am I? and the Imposter Game go great together on the same night.
The yes-or-no questions that work best
With 20 questions max, every one counts. Start with the ones that rule out half the deck: “Am I a person?” “Am I real?” “Am I alive?” And remember the others can see the type on the card (character, celebrity, animal, object, job, food and place), so they know which questions make sense.
Then narrow it down: era, country, job, whether you're in movies or on TV. Blurting out random names is the fastest way to burn through questions, because every wrong guess (“Am I Shrek?” “No.”) counts as one more. Players who think before they ask usually get it in 5 or fewer and get to hand out the sip (or water).
And if you're answering, only “yes” or “no”. If a question doesn't have a clear answer, decide as a group before you reply, but no extra hints.
Who Am I? headband game for adults (18+)
The Spicy level has 41 cards: famous flirts from movies, TV and myth, heartthrobs, party jobs and date-night things. Watching someone ask with a straight face “Would I show up on a first date?” with a movie heartthrob on their forehead gets a lot of laughs.
They're suggestive, but none of them are explicit. Mix them in with the Party cards if the group is comfortable; if not, save them for later. Like everything on this site, it's for adults 18+ (and of legal drinking age where you live).
Can you play without alcohol?
Yes: every sip can be swapped for water, or you can play just for the leaderboard, which gets competitive enough on its own when everyone wants to guess the most cards with the fewest questions. The game works exactly the same.
Who Am I? only needs a phone, so it's an easy pick for any game night, pregame or road-trip stop.
