Our principles

  • Only for people 18 and older, or of the legal drinking age where you live if it's higher (21 in the United States).
  • Nobody has to drink. Every sip can be swapped for water, a soda or a dare.
  • Anyone can pass without having to explain why.
  • A “sip” is small. The games never ask you to finish a drink.

How to play smart

  1. 1
    Water on the table

Keep a pitcher of water handy and have a glass of water between drinks.

  2. 2
    Eat before and during

Drinking on an empty stomach makes the effects of alcohol much stronger.

  3. 3
    Set a pace

The games have lots of turns: if every turn is a drink, that's too much. Use small sips or dares.

  4. 4
    Look out for each other

If someone would rather not drink, nobody pushes. If someone has had too much, they're done with alcohol for the night.

Drinking and driving

If you're driving, don't drink. Play with water or a soda: the game works just the same. In the United States, the legal limit for most drivers is a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% (0.05% in Utah), 0.04% for commercial drivers, and drivers under 21 face zero-tolerance laws. Other countries have different limits, often lower. The only safe level behind the wheel is zero: pick a designated driver or get a ride home.

When you shouldn't drink

  • If you're under the legal drinking age (21 in the United States).
  • If you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you're going to drive or operate machinery.
  • If you take medication that interacts with alcohol.
  • If you have or have had problems with alcohol.

If someone feels sick

Where to get help

If you're worried about your drinking or someone close to you, talk to your doctor. In the United States, the SAMHSA National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) is free, confidential and open 24/7. You'll also find reliable information from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the World Health Organization.
