How to play Would You Rather

Two options, no easy way out and no “it depends”. It's the easiest game for breaking the ice: you can explain it in one sentence, and two rounds in, the table is already debating.

  1. 1Set up the game

    Add the names (2 to 12 players) and pick the level: Mild, Party or Spicy 18+. You can combine them; Mild and Party are selected by default.

  2. 2Whoever's turn it is reads the dilemma

    Read “Would you rather…?” out loud with its two options, A and B. No tweaking and no extra conditions: the options are what they are.

  3. 3On three, everyone picks

    Everyone, including the reader, picks A or B at the same time, for example by raising a hand. Whoever has the phone taps an option for each hand; if they miscount, “Recount” resets the tally.

  4. 4The minority drinks

    Tap “See who drinks” and the option with fewer votes loses: everyone who picked it takes a sip or water. Defending your choice is optional… but that's where the best conversations happen.

  5. 5Tie or everyone agrees

    If A and B tie, whoever read the dilemma drinks. If everyone picks the same thing, nobody drinks that round.

  6. 6Next dilemma

    The turn goes to the next player, who reads the new dilemma. None repeat until the deck for the levels you picked runs out; then it gets shuffled again.

  7. 7Or everyone on their own phone

    In a room, each player votes A or B in secret from their screen and the votes are revealed once everyone has voted. Nobody copies the person next to them, and you can even play long-distance.

  8. 8When to stop

    There's no set ending: play as many rounds as you like or level up once the group loosens up. Nobody has to drink and every sip can be swapped for water.

What is the Would You Rather game and how do you play it online?

Would You Rather is the game of dilemmas: someone gives two options and everyone has to pick one, even if both are bad (or both are amazing). It's one of the most popular question games for breaking the ice. In this version it becomes a voting drinking game: everyone picks at the same time and the minority drinks.

To play Would You Rather online you don't need to download anything: the game runs free in your phone's browser. With one phone, whoever's holding it reads the dilemma and tallies the group's votes. If you'd rather everyone vote from their own screen, create a room and share the link: votes stay secret until everyone has voted, and it works just as well at the same table as on a video call.

It works without alcohol too: whoever ends up in the minority scores a point and, at the end, whoever has the most points does a dare. In teams, each team debates quietly and votes as a block; the team in the minority loses the round.

Hard would you rather questions (and the hardest ones)

The best dilemmas aren't the weirdest ones, they're the ones with no easy answer: “Would you rather always know the truth or live happily without knowing it?”, “Would you rather lose all your photos or lose all your chats?”, “Would you rather relive one day of your life or skip one day of your life?”. They're hard would you rather questions because both options cost you something, so the group splits and the minority has to defend itself.

If you're after the hardest would you rather questions, the trick is that both options hurt, not that they're gross. Raise the stakes with dilemmas that make you give up something real: “Would you rather double your salary or work half the hours?”, “Would you rather go a week without coffee or go a week without social media?”. And if you have a crazy dilemma of your own, read it on your turn instead of the one on screen: the voting rules are the same.

A trick to make them harder: no “it depends” and no inventing conditions. The reader can't tweak the question, and everyone votes on three without overthinking it. The fun part comes after, when the minority explains why they chose what they chose.

Spicy would you rather questions for adults (18+)

The Spicy 18+ level has 81 dilemmas about dates, crushes, exes and flirting: “Would you rather get a bold text or send a bold text?”, “Would you rather admit who here you'd kiss or admit who here you'd go on a date with?”. They're would you rather questions for adults and close friends: bold and full of gossip, but never explicit. For adults 18+ only.

Awkward questions work best when nobody feels forced. Before turning on the Spicy level, make sure everyone's comfortable; if someone would rather not explain their choice, that's respected and you move on to the next dilemma. You can mix it with the Party level so not every round is about dating.

Would you rather questions for couples

Lots of Spicy dilemmas are made for talking about relationships: “Would you rather cuddle all night or each stay on your own side of the bed?”, “Would you rather say ‘I love you’ first or hear it first?”, “Would you rather have your partner read your chats or read theirs?”. They're would you rather questions for couples that work for a dinner for two or a table with several couples.

With two people there's no minority, so the game switches the rule for you: whoever reads the dilemma bets on what the other person will pick, without them seeing. Guess right and the other person drinks; guess wrong and the one who bet does. With several couples at the table, you play with the usual rule, and debates between partners who vote differently are guaranteed.

Funny would you rather questions: crazy, weird and random

04How many would you rather questions are there?

246 dilemmas across three levels: Mild, Party and Spicy 18+. They're all on this page, and the game shuffles them with no repeats until the deck runs out.

05What are the hardest would you rather questions?

The ones that make you give up something important, like “Would you rather always know the truth or live happily without knowing it?” or “Would you rather double your salary or work half the hours?”. The more even the two options, the more the group splits.

06Are there spicy would you rather questions for adults?

Yes: the Spicy level has 81 dilemmas about dates, crushes, exes and flirting, for adults 18+ only and with no explicit content. You can play it on its own or mixed with the other levels.

07Does it work for couples?

Yes. Lots of Spicy dilemmas are about relationships. If it's just the two of you, the game turns into guessing what the other will pick: whoever gets it wrong takes a sip (or water).

08Can you play Would You Rather online or long-distance?

Yes. Create a room and share the link: everyone votes in secret from their phone and the votes are revealed at the same time, at the same table or on a video call.

09Do you have to drink alcohol to play?

No. Every sip can be swapped for water or soda, or you can play for points: whoever ends up in the minority scores one.

10How is it different from Who's Most Likely To?

In both, everyone votes at once, but in Would You Rather you choose between two options and the minority drinks; in Who's Most Likely To you point at someone in the group and whoever gets the most votes drinks.
